Title Sequences

Example 1: Title Sequence with dynamic text and changing colour- A science fiction thriller

Draft: Liquid star ending

This title sequence was created out of an experimentation with 3D light rays shown on the web site Video Copilot.  This title sequence which contains elements of space travel and uses a suspense music theme would fit a science fiction space thriller/horror genre - for example Dr Who.

This video expresses the meaning of the title 'beyond boundaries' in a number of ways. The first way is in the direction of travel, which moves towards something but then passes through it or around it. The second is the passing through frames, which holds the idea of passing into another dimension and the third is moving into the light which holds a spiritual meaning. Also the light itself emanates rays with changing colours and so this further carries the idea of glory and something extraordinary, or something beyond that which is ordinary. This music has an uneasy tone which also adds to this idea of going into the unknown.

After some critical analysis from the workshop, I felt that I could make some improvements. The first was that the initial square tunnel lingered too long and the second was the liquid space ending did not seem to work. The main problem with the ending was that it was a let down to have discovered a dull liquid space, having moved beyond the boundaries of spectacular light rays. After some advise, it was decided that it would be better to fly into a space hole and leave what was beyond to the imagination. This way the mystery beyond is left to the space movie to unfold. The updates to the video are shown below.

Final: Black hole ending

Example 2: Title Sequence - A Family Drama at Milford Sounds

This title sequence is a combination of video clips and still images that I took on a family holiday at Milford Sounds in the South Island of New Zealand. Because this location is well known for mirrored water fiords, I thought it would be good to use this effect as a motif throughout this title sequence.
The video starts with an exit from the Homer tunnel, portraying the idea of going beyond boundaries. It then follows with a series of mirror landscapes and finishes with all the characters in the story.

For a story idea I thought this would suit a family drama, where on a holiday things go wrong and this family becomes stranded in this remote landscape. Here alone, lost and stranded, with their need to survive, deeper family bonds are formed.

The text in this video uses a built in AE text animation effect that I learned from Video Copilot called 'Text Blur Title'. This effect also includes a lens flare which moves from left to right as the text comes on the screen. From a class feedback session the question was raised as to what font should be used for this kind of title sequence. I had originally used an Apple font called Helvetica Neue. This is a great font for reading on a computer screen, however it looks too corporate for an outdoor setting as in this title sequence. I searched through hundreds of fonts to find something solid and round which would reflect the landscape. I found a font called Cooper Std that met this requirement, but to make it even better I used the Layer Styles to add drop shadows, Bevel and Emboss, and a Color Overlay sampled from the sky. I felt this was a vast improvement from my original font.

In reflection I though that maybe some of the keyed movements of the simulated reflections were a bit fast moving. I think that if this title sequence was fractionally longer it would have helped in this case, but I wanted to keep the length to 30 seconds as specified.
